Hand-lettered logo design for an artesian Italian gelato shop based in Cyprus
Food & Beverage
Tina contacted me about the logo for their artesian Italian gelato shop located in Cyprus. They were drawn to a hand-lettered logo approach because their gelato is hand made as well. She was trained in Italy but has no other connections to it and one of the symbols of Penguin’s Parlour are 30+ year old classic English ice cream vans, carefully restored to their original condition and painted in blue and white. The gelato itself is hand made with local ingredients from surrounding villages.
The challenge was to create a logo that doesn’t connect to gelato origins in general rather to create a logo that will match their existing ice cream vans and small shop, attracting families, young adults and everyone who loves a good gelato.
Logo Design Process
After doing initial research on what direction would best suit the brand, I sketched out a few different options for the lettering, keeping in mind that there still needs to be enough space around it to accommodate the tagline and a graphic.
I decided to layout the name into two rows because during the sketching process I have found that the name is quite long when placed in one row. That would result in much smaller letters compared to laying it out into two rows, giving us the ability to make lettering itself larger.
Digitising & Refining
I digitized three of the samples that I thought describe the brand the best and consulted with Tina on the direction.
After discussing the initial samples we agreed that the second one is the strongest option and will be well visible from afar which is what we want for a shop located in a town. The shape of the letters reflect the curves of penguins and they are bold but fun. Adding a small ligature in between the words filled out the space nicely making the logo more balanced and added an additional flavor of being custom made.
The initial brief requested a penguin drawing as well, but after discussing we decided that it would be redundant to use it as a part of the logo because it already contains the word penguin. It was decided that it should be part of the brand on packaging rather than as a part of the logo itself.
The tagline for the shop is “Fresh made gelato” which needed to be combined with the logo, so I did a few options but the one in a circle seemed to be most versatile and it could be used in a wide variety of applications.
Final Logo Design
I can highly recommend Ivana! I’m very impressed with her hand-lettering skills. She has been both helpful and really great at communicating. Over all a great experience!
